The power of psychodrama is routinely experienced in groups where each group member is a therapeutic agent for every other group member, but what if you don’t have a group?
Individual therapists trained in the philosophy and methods of psychodrama can adapt action methods to impact their individual clients. Come learn how you can take these healing techniques from the group room to the consultation room.
This workshop is intended for Psychologists, Social Workers, Psychiatric Nurses, Professional Counselors, Substance Abuse Counselors, and Marriage and Family Therapists. This workshop is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners.

Healthy relationships and support are key to recovery from addictions and trauma. JL Moreno (founder of Psychodrama) created a science called “Sociometry- the quantitative study of interpersonal relationships especially that of preferences. This presentation will provide practical application of one sociometric tool, the social atom, for the clinical assessment of client support systems. Participants will practice creating their own social atom as well as facilitating the psychodramatic technique of role reversal. Role reversal creates and deepens empathy, enhances relationships and assists in healthy decision-making and boundary setting – all necessary components of developing a working recovery support system. Sociometry will also be used to facilitate a novel networking opportunity prior to the presentation.
Objectives:
Define the terms “Sociometry”, “role reversal” and “social atom.”
Utilize the social atom for clinical assessment of client support systems.
Apply the psychodramatic technique of role reversal in clinical practice.

Smartphones in Sessions: Transform Intrusion to Engagement (Part 1 & Part 2) – A full-day workshop using action methods in working with clients and their use of smart phones.
Explore, in action, situations that arise in sessions related to client use of smartphones (e.g., taking a call, texting, checking social media, showing photos or texts to the therapist). You’ll learn psychodramatic interventions to transform intrusions into engagement without taking on a shaming parental role. Debra Wingo Gion, LPC, PAT, CGP, is a co-founder of the Arizona Psychodrama Institute. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, has been a Certified Practitioner of Psychodrama for 25 years. She is also a nationally Certified Group Practitioner through the American Group Psychotherapy Association. She has worked in private practice settings, residential treatment centers and has worked in Canada with First Nations people as well as with the Gila River RBHA clients. She has been doing Trauma Recovery Work for 25 years, both individually and in groups. Debra incorporates her creativity, humor and calm, grounded manner in her work with clients and colleagues. She is excited to be enrolled in the Practitioner Applicant for Trainer in Psychodrama process to become a national trainer. Psychodrama students may receive up to 160 of their training hours from a PAT.
Registration for this workshop constitutes the following Informed Consent: I understand that this workshop is intended only as training, not as therapy. I am aware that psychodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy are powerful methods that must be used carefully. I understand that this is an experiential workshop, that is, I will be allowed and encouraged to participate actively. I understand that as a result of my participation, therapeutic issues for further exploration may be revealed and that it is my responsibility to seek professional services for therapy, if such a need should arise. Workshop leaders are available to make referrals to professionals in my area. I have also been informed that the workshop may be videotaped for Debra Wingo Gion’s Primary and Secondary TEP trainers to evaluate Debra’s teaching methods, areas of strength and to target opportunities for improvement.
